How Are Cheek Augmentation Procedures Performed?
Cheek implant surgery is performed in a certified outpatient surgical suite using general anesthesia for the patient’s optimal comfort. The procedure is usually performed through an incision in the mouth, placed just above the gum line. Dr. Clymer creates a pocket, above the bony surface of the cheek, to insert the implant and stabilizes the implant with a screw. The screw is safe and left in to hold the implant in place. Smaller implants to improve the hollows below the eyes can be placed in a similar manner through blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) incisions.
Fat transfer or grafting is performed on an outpatient basis. Excess fat is removed with a very small needle from your body (stomach or flanks) under local anesthetic. Once removed the fat is processed and then carefully injected into the targeted facial areas. Some fat is reabsorbed by the body.
Advanced facial fillers may also be used to volumize your face and augment your cheekbones. Dermal filler injections are done in the office. Today’s vast array of different types of fillers makes this approach highly customizable.
What Can You Expect After Your Cheek Implant Procedure?
Cheek implants typically recover quickly but some dietary restrictions associated with chewing will be discussed. Physical activities such as bending and lifting are limited for several days.* Stitches used to close the incision inside your mouth are dissolvable.
Fat grafting patients can expect some moderate swelling and bruising. Patients can expect to look swollen for about a week. However, normal activities can be resumed quickly.*
Dermal filler patients experience no or minimal pain and can resume normal activities immediately.*
